Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to teach the lessons in pairs?

The lessons are designed to give students experiences of linked mathematical ideas. As such, we recommend you use each assessment starter and then proceed to teach the linked pair of lessons as this will enable you to make best use of formative assessment. However, this is a recommendation and not an obligation, but we believe the full benefits of the lessons will occur over time if taught in pairs.

Can I teach the lessons with younger or older students?

The lessons have been designed for Year 8 students but some of them have been successfully used with classes of younger and older students, including some primary and Key Stage 5 classes.

My students took longer than one lesson to do the activity. Does this matter?

We believe it is important to give students time to engage with and talk about the mathematical ideas in the lessons. Sometimes, this can take longer than one lesson.
